The Story
Climate protection is a global challenge. However, especially in developing countries, there is often a lack of capital to finance CO2 mitigation and adaption projects. On the other hand, there is enough capital and interest from private investors to finance precisely these projects. This is where the crowd investing platform Crowd4Climate comes in and enables citizens in Europe to participate in climate protection projects in developing countries.
The platform Crowd4Climate was developed and set up by the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology (ÖGUT) together with the company Energy Changes as part of a project supported by the Austrian Ministry for Climate Protection. Since then, Crowd4Climate has been presenting selected crowd investing projects in developing countries that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and to sustainable development. By early 2020, six projects in Africa and Asia and in Brazil have already been financed, which not only generate renewable energy but also create regional jobs.
Success Factor | Hero Moment
As far as the financing of climate protection projects is concerned, projects are often too small for development banks. Other, smaller projects, on the other hand, are financed exclusively by donations. However, many projects are able to generate revenues and thus repay the money invested. Crowd4Climate tries to close this gap by using subordinated loans and an easy-to-use web-based investment process to finance projects that are particularly characterized by their focus on ecological, social and ethical aspects. The heroes are the individual investors who decided to invest their money profitably and in a fair way. Investments can be made starting from as low as 250 euros.
