The Story
FOR FOREST – The Voice for Trees has its roots in the unique art intervention “FOR FOREST – The Unending Attraction of Nature” based on a drawing by Max Peintner from 1970/71. In Autumn 2019 the Wörthersee football stadium in Klagenfurt, Austria, was turned into a native central European forest. Almost 300 trees, some weighing up to six tons each, were carefully installed on the existing pitch of the stadium which can hold up to 30.000 spectators. Bringing together art, nature and architecture in an unprecedented way, Austria’s largest art intervention to date inspired people around the world and encouraged them to discuss environmental issues and the future health of our forests, as well as to explore new possibilities and ideas.
FOR FOREST wants to continue giving forests a strong and powerful voice as well as an open stage where art and culture will play an essential role. This global initiative will attract attention to forests and the current issues they are facing by supporting and promoting projects that raise awareness for environmental protection and the climate crisis in creative, sustainable and eco-friendly ways.
Success Factor | Hero Moment
FOR FOREST largely attracted attention during the art intervention “The Unending Attraction of Nature”. Media in over 80 countries all over the world wrote about the project – among them The New York Times, BBC, CNN… Actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio also shared photos of the forest on Instagram with his 37 million followers. On a local level, the synergy that emerged from the FOR FOREST satellite program was also essential, as many different cultural institutions animated the city with art exhibitions, theater, opera, conferences, films, literature… These events brought people together in Austria to discuss fundamental environmental issues.
