The Story
Many, especially rural regions of Sri Lanka are facing prevalent chronic kidney diseases (CKDu) which are being associated with contaminated groundwater and progressing climate change. The objective of this project was to augment the existing facilities and to increase the capacity of the water supply scheme covering the Mahiyanganaya development area in order to provide safe drinking water to the rural population of around 33,300 inhabitants. By designing, constructing and expanding the public water supply facilities in Mahiyanganaya and Rideemaliyadda, the basic prerequisites were created to improve the health and general living standard and to reduce poverty in the region.
The treatment plant with a capacity of 6,500 m³ of treated water per day as well as around 70 km of water distribution system provide water to Mahiyanganaya Town and District. The potential capacity increase of 400% will secure the future expansion of connections, thereby further tackling the most critical social issue in the area. In addition, a solar energy plant produces renewable energy on site.
Success Factor | Hero Moment
The water treatment plant was successfully commissioned in March 2016 and since that time has been in continuous operation, providing safe drinking water to the local communities.
